Living on Campus in the IST SLO
When at a big university like Penn State, it can be hard to find people who are in your major outside of the classroom. But with The Information Sciences and Technology SLO, students are given the ability to live and interact with other students within The College of IST and in the residence halls. This helps connect students outside of the classroom, and help forge new friendships. The Information Sciences and Technology Special Living Option strives to create a unique living environment that fosters student interaction, both social and academic. We aim to enhance the awareness of Information and Technology by bringing residents of common interests together and advocating for a greater appreciation for the future of technology.
What is the IST SLO?
SLO stands for Special Living Option. In an SLO, students can choose to live with other students who have the same academic and/or lifestyle choices. By being in an SLO students are able to build a unique living environment and community of like minded individuals at Penn State. As a member of the IST SLO, students will have the ability to attend events such as floor dinners, movie nights, themed holiday parties, join the intramural IST SLO sports team, attend academic events , and much more!
Benefits of Living in the IST SLO
- Guaranteed housing if you participate in SLO events.
- You can even choose your room after freshman year if you want!
- Convenient location: close to the Westgate (IST) Building and many general education classroom buildings.
- Spacious doubles and singles with moveable furniture so you can configure your room however you wish.
- Close proximity to peers who have taken the classes you will be taking and can offer advice and help with assignments and studying.
- One-on-one access to IST club leaders so you can learn about the IST student organizations that interest you.
- Most importantly, have fun with fellow classmates, both academically and socially! You'll be seeing them for the next four years.
Already On Campus and want to join?
Are you already living on campus, but you want to join the IST SLO? Anyone can join the SLO, regardless of your major, or where you are currently living on campus. If you want to join, all you have to do is email slo@ist.psu.edu to get added to our Canvas page which will allow you to see all of our events. After that, you will be able to see when our events are, and meet new people in the process!
Staying involved with the SLO
During the semester, you'll be invited to take part in many special events with your floor mates - Special events that other regular residence halls cannot make happen! Attending events and gaining points enables you to stay on the floor and even choose your room after your freshman year. It's such a great experience that many upperclassmen choose the SLO instead of an apartment off campus!
Advising and Major Nights
These are events that involve (but are not limited to) teaching members how to schedule classes, use LionPath, or even use Canvas.
Super Bowl and Stanley Cup Watch Parties
Do you like watching the Super Bowl, or even the Stanley Cup? Why watch it alone when you can watch it with people you live with?
Career Fairs
Members get exposure to future employeers, and get the opportunity to start building their resume through the College of IST.
Joint events with other IST clubs
Meet members from other Special Living Options by coming to events that are run jointly between the IST SLO and another special living option.
Movie Nights
Who doesn't love watching a good movie about or involving technology? Come join the IST SLO at these events if you want to expand your movie genere.
Floor Dinners
Nobody likes eating alone, so why not eat with members who have the same interests as you?

Where is the SLO?
The SLO is in Thompson Hall, in West Housing- near several high-profile buildings. We're on the second floor!

Do I have to be an IST student to join?
Nope! Any Penn State student can join the SLO, from incoming Freshmen to Upperclassmen in a different college.
